Dogs - whether big or small, whether just one or more - are very much loved and welcome in Bella Tuscany!
Nowadays many Tuscans have a dog; often the four-legged friends also have a real task, either guard dogs or hunting dogs. This is because Tuscany consists mainly of small villages.
Therefore, in the past years, the dog-friendly accommodations have increased a lot!
The best time to travel with a dog in Tuscany is in spring, late summer or autumn. But also in the hot summer months you will always find a shady place for your four-legged friends.
But what can you actually do with dogs in Tuscany?
For the water dogs there are many dog beaches and/or free beaches along the coast, most are marked by signs. For example, a few kilometers south of Livorno, there are the wild rocky beaches of Calafuria, where dogs are welcome, or on the Etruscan coast, between Cecina and Piombino, there are beautiful extensive sandy beaches, mostly without a Lido.
But you may also visit some cultural highlights of Tuscany… then Lucca is the perfect destination!
This charming little town is surrounded by an ancient city wall (4 km long and 12 metres high), once fortified and now a green area, lined with bastions, which invites you to take wonderful walks under century-old trees.
Cars are almost displaced within the city walls of Lucca. So it is a real pleasure to stroll through the alleys of this unique city. On the wall, there are boxes with dog bags and numerous wells with drinking water…. dogs simply belong to this city!
Restaurant with dog: yes or no? Yes! By law dogs are welcome in specially marked bars, restaurants or cafés. However, it is advisable to ask again. Well-behaved dogs are allowed almost everywhere! During the summer months most of the restaurants are outside. Here the four-legged friends are welcome in any case!

Many years ago, dog-friendly holiday homes were a rarity in Tuscany and only recently the holiday home owners understand how nice it is to welcome dogs. Even in the 80's dogs in Tuscany were really kept and looked at differently; fortunately this is now different!
Most of our holiday homes are located in the countryside (cottages, apartments, farmstead, B&B rooms, between Pisa and Volterra) i.e. ideal for your pets! But also cities like Lucca, Volterra and San Gimignano can be visited wonderfully with dogs.
